There are many different file decompressors that exist, but many of them require you to pay or subscribe to some type of membership. For this reason, we recommend a totally free, open source option – 7-Zip.

Now that you have prepared yourself with the proper equipment, it’s time for us to learn how to open rar files. In order to extract the rar files you simply need to follow the outlined steps below. Yes, there are only three steps. Once you go through them once you will be set to do it again and again without having to re-read the tutorial. Let’s get cracking!

Step 1: When you download a RAR file it will appear as an unidentified icon of some sort. By default your computer does not know how to open rar files which is why you need some type of program to do it for you.

Step 2: After you have installed whatever software you chose, right click on the file and a list of options will appear. Choose extract to “Folder\”. This will place all of the files from inside the archive into a newly created folder in the same directory.

Step 3: You did it! You have opened a rar file. Easy, huh? You can now navigate inside of the folder and access the files just as you would any normal file-type.

Most people are very intimidated by the foreign file-type and think that it is much more complicated to open a RAR than it really is. If you follow these 4 very simple steps you will see that there is no real reason to complicate things and they will soon become a part of every day computer usage.
